This unique walking experience is ideal for guests looking for an adventurous and authentic option offering the ambience of a tented bush camp of old Safari lore. The camp is located on a plateau set amongst the only basalt and granite extrusions on Shamwari. A truly magical setting awaits!!
This is a flexible experience for guests to explore Shamwari Game Reserve as we believe that the rigidity of travel needs to be simplified by going back to basics.
This explorer camp reflects the original safari of being on foot and sleeping around the fire at night within the comfort of a bush tent.
Guests will enjoy walks through the magnificent Shamwari Game Reserve, whereby their guide will enhance their experience with birding, cultural history and other natural history of the area, along with ample opportunity of some Big 5 encounters.

Shamwari, meaning “my friend” in Shona, is the pinnacle of private game reserves and home to the coveted Big 5. Stretching 25,000 hectares over a malaria free landscape, it offers an award-winning nature experience and is one of the largest private conservation initiatives in Southern Africa.
Shamwari is a place where guests can exist in harmony with nature, however fleeting the moment, where wildlife freely roam the landscape under the relentless African sun.
Shamwari incorporates five lodges, one villa and one explorer camp; each one unique with its own essence. Lodges are designed in harmony with their surroundings where guests can experience nature in sublime comfort.
Camp Site The camp site is unfenced to provide the true explorer ambience and tents are placed in fairly close proximity without encroaching on another tents privacy. Wild animals are able to cross through the camp at any time and although all safety precautions have been followed in setting up the camp; this remains a reality. • Tents: 3 x Mobile canvas (camping) tents sleeping a maximum of 2 people each • Meals: All meals are prepared and enjoyed under the stars • Ablutions: 2 x Outside showers shared by all guests and 1 x flush toilet shared by all guests
Tent details • 2 x Fold out aluminium stretchers with individual duvets and pillows • 1 x Three tier cupboard (small) • 1 x LED light for night time use • 1 x Outside hand basin (warm water is supplied on request or at first light in the morning) • 1 x Hammock nestled next to amazing rock figs and basalt rocks • Guest amenities include insect repellent, toilet paper, towels, tissues, sanitary bags as well as shower gel and shampoo
A Typical Stay The following program is a guideline as all timings are subject to discussions upon arrival
Day 1, day of arrival (Friday) • All guests arrive at Eagles Crag by 12h00 • Meet your specialist guide who will host you for lunch at Eagles Crag • Transfer in an open game viewing vehicle to the Explorer Camp • Camp orientation • Afternoon walk • Sundowner snacks and drinks are enjoyed upon return to camp • Enjoy dinner and an evening around the fire
Day 2 (Saturday) • Early rising can be expected due to the nature of walking and temperatures during summer • During winter guests can expect to rise later due to the cold and set out on trail late morning • Enjoy muffins, fruit sticks, biscuits, tea and coffee amongst mother nature • Morning walk commences and can last up to 4 hours, depending on temperatures • Enjoy a hearty brunch upon return to camp or expect a brunch surprise out in the bush • Relax in your hammock, catch up on some rest or simply adore the wild • A variety of light sandwiches with fresh fruits will be enjoyed for lunch • Afternoon hike • Sundowner drinks are enjoyed in the bush, close to camp • Enjoy dinner and an evening around the fire
Day 3, day of departure (Sunday) • Early rising can be expected due to temperatures during summer • Enjoy a breakfast in the bush before departing at 10h00 • A brief walk on morning of departure is optional
Inclusions & Exclusions
Rates are: - quoted, invoiced and payable in ZAR - quoted per adult sharing per night - subject to a 50% supplement for single explorers - inclusive of all meals, beverages, walking activities, tourism levy and 14% Vat
Explorer Camp Rates, Terms & Conditions · Shamwari Explorer Camp is sold as a two night walking trail package, therefore two (2) nights (Friday & Saturday) are automatically booked and payable at the time of reserving this unique experience; Sunday night can be added onto the two night stay at the standard rates mentioned below
· The Explorer Camp operates throughout the year
· Each trail is 2 nights with a set arrival each Friday of the week (Sunday night can be added as an optional 3rd night on request)
· The walking trails are hosted and guided by an armed qualified walking guide
· Distances walked vary each day but can last up to 4 hours each
· A game viewing vehicle remains in camp and depending on where guests walk that day, the trail may start from camp or depart camp by vehicle to visit another area of the reserve
· We regret that no persons younger than 16 years or older than 60 years will be able to participate
· Please ask your reservations consultant regarding a third or fourth night at any of our five star, luxury lodges
· Bookings for Explorer Camp is only confirmed once the guests have signed the booking form
What To Pack • Clothing of neutral colors that is light in weight, but warm – Bright coloured clothing must be avoided – 3 x Shirts – 3 x Shorts – 2 x pants (long) – 1 x warm jersey or jacket as the evenings can get cold – thermal underwear • Hiking or trail shoes • Sandals for showering • Sun block • Hat • Camera • Binoculars

Sunday night can be added onto the two night stay at the standard rates • Each trail is 2 nights with a set departure each Friday of the week (Sunday night can be added as an optional 3rd night on request) • The walking trails are hosted and guided by an armed qualified walking guide • Distances walked vary each day but can last up to 4 hours • A game viewing vehicle remains in camp and depending on where guests walk that day, the trail may start from camp or depart camp by vehicle to visit another area of the reserve • We regret that no persons younger than 16 years will be able to participate. • Participants older than 60 years will be required to provide a medical clearance certificate in order to participate.
