Spellbinding story-telling evokes the excitement of great wars, the proud Zulu nation and Africa’s wildlife as you uncover the exciting historical and cultural chronicles that have all played their part in shaping South Africa as a country today. This tour ranges from the Natal Battlefields through the former Zulu Kingdom taking in the abundant wild lands of this region.

Itinerary:

Day One
Arrive Johannesburg OR Tambo International Airport. Transfer to hotel. Remainder of the day at leisure (unescorted).

Day Two
After breakfast head out to Spioenkop, the third and bloodiest attempt by the British to relieve the besieged Ladysmith. Our specialist guide will transport you back to January 1900, as he plays out the tragic battle between Boer and Brits. Picnic lunch on the battlefields before arriving at the hotel in the mid afternoon. [BPLD]

Day Three
This morning we visit Isandlwana, where 20 000 mighty Zulu warriors took on the firepower of the British troops, and wiped out close to an entire regiment in about 2½ hours. After lunch, we visit Rorke’s Drift where we will relive the experience of a handful of British soldiers, who fought off 4 000 Zulus for 12 hours, in a battle which saw the award of 11 Victoria Crosses. Return to hotel late afternoon. [BD]

Day Four
Early breakfast. Visit the Umgungundlovu Interpretive Centre and the KwaZulu Cultural Museum at Ondini, both offering an interactive tale of Zulu culture. Travel through Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve. Overnight at a lodge in the Hluhluwe region. [B]

Day Five
Early morning game drive through Hluhluwe- Umfolozi Game Reserve in an open safari vehicle. This afternoon, enjoy an interactive cheetah encounter of the cat rehabilitation programme. [B]

Day Six
Depart early for a cruise on the St Lucia Estuary, part of the World Heritage Site, the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park (weather permitting). Transfer to Durban, arriving late morning when our tour ends. [B]

Day1 - PROTEA HOTEL OR TAMBO AIRPORT
Set in the heart of Kempton Park, only minutes from OR Tambo International Airport, the 4-star Protea Hotel OR Tambo Airport offers an ideal location for travellers. Day 2 & Day 3 - RORKE’S DRIFT HOTEL

Step back in time with an exterior inspired by Zulu design and a luxurious interior taking its cues from the Victorians. Day 4 & Day 5 - EMDONENI LODGE
Emdoneni Lodge is perfect intersection between wildlife and luxury accommodation. Located on a small game reserve in KwaZulu-Natal, this tastefully furnished lodge offers guests intimate accommodation and true South African hospitality and cuisine. Elegant chalets and rondavels provide comfort in a forest setting. Perfect for nature lovers, at Emdoneni you can get up close to a variety of game. Once the day is done, watch the sun go down from the deck and enjoy a drink around a hearty open fire.
